BATISTA, Inês Catarina  e  PEREIRA, Henrique. Mental health disparities between older gay and bisexual men with and without HIV. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2020, vol.21, n.1, pp.53-61. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/20psd210109.

This study aims to assess the disparities between the levels of mental health of older gay and bisexual men, according to their HIV status. 201 gay and bisexual men answered the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, as well as the BSI-18. Of the sample collected, 80.6% of men identified themselves as gay and 13.9% as bisexual, with 16.9% being HIV+ men. The self-esteem, somatization, depression and anxiety levels of the sample were estimated by comparing the HIV+ and HIVvalues. The sample collected reveals average levels of self-esteem, showing levels of somatization, depression and anxiety below the population average. Bisexual older men show higher levels of self-esteem and, consequently, lower levels of depression when compared to older gay men. In contrast, when comparing the groups of older gay and bisexual men HIV+ and HIV-, there are no statistically significant differences. With this study, we hope to fill a void that exists in Portugal about this area of prevention and intervention, aiming to contribute to the development of programs regarding mental health in gay and bisexual communities.

Palavras-chave : mental health; self-esteem; somatization; depression; anxiety; HIV.
