Abstract

SANTOS, Inês; HUMBOLDT, Sofia von  and  LEAL, Isabel. The effect of body image and marital satisfaction in the adjustment to ageing of the elderly. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2020, vol.21, n.1, pp.111-116. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/20psd210117.

This study had as objectives to verify if the body image and the marital satisfaction have an influence on the aging adjustment. Method: This investigation presents a quantitative, transverse and relational methodology. In total, 193 participants, with ages between 65 and 93 years, of which 58 were men and 135 were women, have answered the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Sociodemographic and Health data questionnaire, the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2), the Scale of Evaluation of the Satisfaction on the Marital Areas of Life (EASAVIC), and the Adjustment to Aging scale (ATAS). Results: The body image (β =.229; t(189)=3.051; p=.003) and the marital satisfaction (β=.148; t(189)=2.071; p=.040), are both significant predictors of the adjustment to aging (β =-.205; t(189)=-2.924; p=.004), which suggests that the body image has a moderator effect in the relation between the marital satisfaction and the adjustment to aging. Discussion: This study concludes that the body image and the marital satisfaction have an impact on the adjustment to aging of seniors, something that contributes to a successful aging.
