Abstract

PAULO, Cristina Monteiro  and  ESGALHADO, Graça. Religiosity and successful aging in older gay and bisexual men. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2020, vol.21, n.1, pp.124-130. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/20psd210119.

This study addresses religiosity and successful aging (SA). This is a process of development, state of satisfaction and well-being in the face of aging, while religiosity is a social resource, with rituals and religious activities. Objectives: to describe sociodemographic data on the religiosity of gays and bisexuals and perceptions about SA indicators. The study is quantitative and descriptive. Participants: 201 men, selected by convenience, from 50 to 79 years old (M=58,8; SD=6,20). Regarding sexual orientation, 85,1% claim to be homosexual and 14,9% bisexual. About religion, 58,2% say they do not follow a religion and 41,8% follow. Of these, 75,6% practice the Catholic religion and 24,4% others. Instruments: Sociodemographic Questionnaire and Successful Aging Inventory (Zhang, Liu, & Wu, 2018). Results: Regarding the frequency of the practice of religious rituals, 41,3% say they never practice. The importance of religion is moderate to 32,8%. They received moderate religious education, 43,3%. The majority (75,6%) considers that their religious faith does not affect their sexual behavior. Most of the sample states that being happy, independent, having physical mobility, an active social life, friends, good economic conditions, be able to work, live with the partner, take care of family members and not have chronic diseases, contribute to an SA. Conclusion: For this sample, religion does not seem to have much impact, thus justifying the deepening of this theme.
