Long working hours and overtime work have increased worldwide in recent years as a result of economic globalization and growing competition. Long working hours increase the risk of unfavorable health events. Biomedical literature has been researched in articles on long working hours and their impact on health, published in the last ten years. The results show that overtime and long working hours have harmful effects on the physical and mental health of workers. The implications in terms of cardiovascular disease, and in particular coronary heart disease, the effects on mental health, changes associated with organ structures and occupational accidents as well as barriers in the access to preventive and preventive health care are discussed with particular emphasis in the case of health care workers. Adjusting work environments, after identifying the risk factors and implementing corrective measures can minimize those effects which tend to be neglected in favor of productivity.
