Abstract

PEREIRA, Joana  and  LEAL, Isabel. Study of an attitude scale towards breastfeeding. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2020, vol.21, n.3, pp.726-734.  Epub Dec 31, 2020. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/20psd210315.

The practice of breastfeeding is recommended and widely studied in the logic of promoting public policies. Several barriers, both physical and psychological, have been identified that discourage this practice, including the lack of social support. The man, partner of the woman who breastfeed, should be an element of support for the success of breastfeeding, hence the need to study his attitudes towards breastfeeding. The lack of scales to assess men's attitudes towards breastfeeding made it pertinent to create a new scale and validate it for the Portuguese population. The validation sample consists of 310 men, aged over 18 years. The 33-item attitudes questionnaire was constructed taking into account the literature review and content analysis of interviews conducted for the purpose. After the analysis of its psychometric characteristics, through an exploratory factor analysis, the scale of attitudes was reduced to 22 items, divided into three sub-scales, the cognitive, the affective and the behavioral components, essential to define attitudes. It stands out, therefore, its utility for clinical and research purposes.

Keywords : Breastfeeding; attitudes; father involvement.
