DUARTE, Roberto et al. Relationship between self-perception of health, functional capacity and cognition in octogenarians. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2020, vol.21, n.3, pp.896-908.  Epub 31-Dez-2020. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/20psd210329.

Life satisfaction and health perception depend on cognitive and subjective assessments; therefore they are based on their own criteria of life itself and the way it faces personal and health problems. The study aim was to relate functional capacity, cognition, mood with self-perception about their health status of octogenarian elderly. A total of 103 elderly individuals of both genders were evaluated, with 30 men with average age of 82.7(±2.98) years and 73 women with average age of 82.6(±2.97) years. The evaluations were carried out by the questionnaires: Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), Health and psychosocial variables, Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), functional capacity for Advanced Activities of Daily Living (AADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs), and handgrip strength test. A total of 103 elderly individuals were evaluated, the majority being female (70.9%) aged between 80 and 94 years. Negative self-perception was associated with the presence of Sarcopenia, altered MMSE, dependence on instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) and low schooling. And there was no association with mood (GDS). The self-perception of health of the elderly individuals is multifactorial and is related to the presence of functional alterations that lead to dependence, low schooling and cognitive alterations.
