Abstract

SCHMIDT, Karine et al. Double trouble: stress and anger in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2020, vol.21, n.3, pp.944-955.  Epub Dec 31, 2020. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/20psd210333.

Stress and anger are related to several chronic and degenerative pathologies. The aim of this study was to correlate the presence of stress as well as its phases with the anger expression in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory study. A total of 246 working-age patients treated for infarction at a referral cardiology hospital from January 2017 to March 2018 were included. Patients completed the Lipp Stress Symptom Inventory (ISSL) and the Spielberger Trait-state Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI). This study demonstrated a 74% prevalence of stress in STEMI patients. Considering the resistance phase as moderate stress (41%), and the final phases of near exhaustion (10%) and exhaustion (17%) as severe stress, we accounted for 68% of post-STEMI patients in moderate / severe stress. Patients with AMI then have high levels of stress. There was a progressive increase in the gross anger scale scores between stress-free patients and those with stress in the early and later phases, and the stressed ones had higher scores in all STAXI subscales. The early stages of stress do not change the expression of anger, however, with the enduring circumstances, there is an increase in anger manifestations and less control of this emotion.

Keywords : Stress; psychological; anger; myocardial infarction.
