Resumen

BATISTA, Luana; MAIA, Luis  y  SILVA, Sofia. Evaluation of general and specific domains in developmental dyscalculia: what to investigate?. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2020, vol.21, n.3, pp.956-966.  Epub 31-Dic-2020. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/20psd210334.

Developmental dyscalculia is part of specific learning disorders and affects 3 to 5% of the school-age population. It is characterized by a difficulty in numerical processing and basic calculations with early and persistent manifestation throughout development. Neuropsychological assessment and its tools are useful in establishing a clinical diagnosis. Dyscalculia affects general and specific domains of cognition. In general domains, it is important to evaluate verbal representations, visuospatial skills, executive functions and working memory. In the specific domains, it is necessary to investigate non-symbolic representations, transcoding, operators, concepts, procedures, arithmetic facts and verbally formulated problems. In addition, children with learning disabilities are susceptible to the development of emotional and behavioural problems, and their investigation is highly necessary. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the disorder facilitates the understanding of the skills preserved and impaired in the individual.

Palabras clave : Dyscalculia; learning disorder; neuropsychological assessment; difficulty in mathematics.
