CARVALHO, Anderson de; GRUBITS, Heloísa; VERA, José Ángel  e  DURAZO, Francisco. QOL AND COPING in patients after head and neck surgery. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.1, pp.240-251.  Epub 30-Abr-2021. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/21psd220121.

The objective of this research was to identify the coping strategies used by patients with head and neck surgery to cope with the disease and their associated perception of health-related quality of life. This is an exploratory-descriptive, comparative and cross-sectional study. 55 patients with care between 1-7 days (first week) after head and neck surgery at a hospital in Campo Grande, MS were included; the convenience sample was composed of 28 (50.9%) men and 27 (49.1%) women. Sociodemographic questionnaire, EORTC QLQ-C30, EORTC QLQ-H & N35 specific to head and neck cancer and Billings and Moos Coping Scale were applied. It is observed that the quality of life is affected in the disease, especially regarding socialization references, with recurrent nutritional restrictions, tensions and risk of isolation; dysphagia being one of the main factors of negative effect on health-related quality of life, dysphonia is another factor that decreases this condition, with a strong relation to financial difficulties. The gender of the patient, the city of residence, the reception of treatment and nutritional assistance have a determining role in nutritional problems. Behavioral coping strategies with a focus on the problem are the most used by women. Coping in this disease, ideally, proved to be a combination of emotion and focus on the problem, with follow-up studies indicated in later surgical periods.
