Religiosity/spirituality (R/S) is a strength related to transcendence, which has been investigated in health care contexts based on Positive Psychology. The aim of this study is to discuss how the strength of transcendence can be present in the professional routine of nurses who work in a general hospital from the notion of R/S as a strategy or intervention in the care provided. 34 nurses were interviewed at a General Hospital in the interior of the state of São Paulo (Brazil). Respondents report that there is no consensus on a care protocol that encompasses R/S, with some professionals questioning the patient about it and others don’t, but most recognize this dimension as a resource, source of meaning and transcendence in the face of illness. At the same time, they signal cultural/social resistance and difficulties to feel better prepared so that care of this dimension is more present in their professional practices. The evidence in this study is added to others available in the literature that consider R/S to be a dimension capable of promoting benefits for health outcomes, but it stands out for bringing a recognition that this dimension is not just another component to be evoked in care, but a human need that leads to a connection with the most intimate and most sacred to oneself, of feelings and the ability to transcend difficulties. Therefore, the need for more humanized, integrated health training focused on resources for overcoming, transformation and well-being is reinforced.
