Abstract

SANTOS, Leonor; QUEIROS, Sílvia; MENESES, Rute  and  COUTO, Germano. Characterisation of communication skills training programs: a systematic review. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.2, pp.359-373.  Epub Aug 31, 2021. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/21psd220204.

The high importance of health communication, as a vital competence in the practice of care and fundamental in health education, determines the importance of its training. Thus, it was sought to identify training programs of communication skills for health professionals, including physiotherapists, and systematize their characterization. To this end, a systematic review of the literature was conducted based on the Statement Preferred Reporting Items For Systematic Reviews And Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Thirteen articles out of 329 identified were included in the qualitative synthesis, after applying the eligibility criteria. It was verified variability in the procedures and that the information is not always enough to characterize each program in detail. The great majority of the programs were directed to professionals, with group sessions, in-person and theoretical-practical; as training methods, practical exercises with and without role-play, audiovisual means, critical discussion and supply of support material were commonly used. Most studies revealed effective programs, particularly those that included students. The results suggest that the structure of the program may be more relevant than its duration, the communication skills trained, or the techniques and methods used. The small number of studies identified within physiotherapy is suggestive of the relevance of further studies in this area, particularly with students.
