Abstract

Shift work has increased worldwide in recent years. The use of this form of work organization is a consequence of the increased competition intensified by globalization. Shift work has negative effects on workers' health by increasing the risk of illness. Articles published in biomedical literature during the last eleven years on the effects of shift work in workers’ health was analysed. As a result of the disruption of circadian rhythms and the neuro-endocrine changes associated with unhealthy lifestyles, incidence of various diseases increase. Both non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions are ineffective in reducing the risks associated with shift work.
