Abstract

CORREIA, Cátia  and  LEAL, Isabel. Perception of parenting educational styles and childhood depression, anxiety and stress. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.2, pp.537-546.  Epub Aug 31, 2021. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/21psd220218.

The specialty investigation states that parental educational styles have an impact on children's development, but there is a lack of empirical data that relates the perception, that children have, of parental educational styles with psychopathological symptoms. In this sense, the initial question that was asked was: What is the relationship between the perception of parenting educational styles and depression, anxiety and stress in school-aged children? The study included 79 children, 38 females and 41 males, aged between 9 and 12 years, and their parents. Two samples were collected: 39 children from the clinical sample and 40 from the school sample. Three instruments were applied: 1) Sociodemographic Data Questionnaire for Parents / Children; 2) Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale for Children (EADS-C) and Egna Minnen Betraffande Uppfostran Portuguese version (EMBU-C). Based on the data collected, for the Clinical sample we concluded that Depression is explained only by the perception of Rejection and Attempt to Control by the Father (45,3%), whereas Anxiety and Stress is explained by the perception of Rejection by the Father and Attempt to Control by the Mother (57,4% e 45,5%). For the School sample, we conclude that Depression is only explained by perception of Rejection and Attempt to Control by the Mother (24,9%), Anxiety by the perception of Attempt to Control by the Father and Rejection by the Mother (22,7%), whereas Stress is exclusively explained by the perception of Rejection of Father (53,3%).
