This study investigated the effectiveness of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction - MBSR technique on the occurrence and levels of stress and anxiety among 52 volunteers over 18 years old, of whom 28 were undergoing psychological or psychiatric treatment. A standardized inventory was used to assess stress and another to assess anxiety in the pre-test and post-test; and a sociodemographic questionnaire was applied in the pre-test. The training at MBSR was carried out over eight weeks, according to the protocol established by Kabat-Zinn. At the end of the program, there was a significant reduction (p <0.005) in the occurrence and levels of stress for the entire sample, with no difference between the participants who were or were not undergoing treatment. Anxiety levels were also significantly reduced for the total sample and for the treatment group (p <0.005). The data point to the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation as a non-medication intervention technique, without the use of equipment and without side effects, to treat stress and anxiety in the adult population.
