The purpose of this review was to evaluate the use of psychological techniques in the management of the behavior of patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a dental environment. We used a search strategy that was adequate for Pubmed, Cochrane Library, LILACS and Scopus databases. We included articles in English that used psychological techniques to manage the dental behavior of patients with ASD. Those who used aversive and pharmacological techniques and those not related to dentistry or ASD were excluded. We found 242 articles, of which 9 were included in the review. Characteristics and data were described descriptively. Most studies included patients between 6 and 12 years of age, with a diagnosis of mild to slightly severe ASD. Eight studies conducted more than one consultation for patient desensitization and adaptation, and one performed single consultation. Most of the studies used modeling, with image and book features with care steps. There were also videos showing neurotypical child in dental consultation, self-modeling or video glasses with the favorite film. Alternate techniques cited were: intervention in adapted multisensory environment and the D-TERMINED program, where 3 repetition factors are used: visual contact, positional modeling and time counting to finalize the procedure. It can be concluded that multiple consultations and techniques such as desensitization, distraction and modeling contribute favorably to the management of the behavior of patients with ASD, during dental care, even in non-verbal, with low intellectual level.
