SOUZA, Diego et al. Successful aging, quality of life and markers of response to physiological stress. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.1, pp.47-56.  Epub 30-Abr-2022. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/22psd230105.

Population aging is an increasingly present phenomenon in developed and developing countries. The Lifespan theory seeks to understand the means of compensating for the losses of old age, through the strategies of selection, optimization and compensation. Objective: To analyze the association of successful aging strategies with depression, quality of life, schooling and markers of response to physiological stress in the elderly in the community. Method: A quantitative study, with a cross-sectional design, in which 193 elderly people living in southern Brazil were evaluated for cognition, schooling, depression, quality of life, successful aging strategies, cortisol and sirtuin. Descriptive and correlation analyzes (Spearman) were performed through SPSS v. 25.0. Results: The elderly had a good index of SOC strategies, with selection based on losses as the most used. Successful aging strategies were positively correlated with quality of life and negatively correlated with depression. In addition, cortisol was negatively related to loss-based selection in women and to compensation in men. The optimization strategy was found to be positively related to sirtuin in women. Conclusion: These findings point to the possibility of interventions and public policies aimed at the elderly based on strategies of selection, optimization and compensation. In addition successful aging strategies present themselves as possible mediators between the psychological, biological and social factors of aging, as well as indicators of the aging process with quality of life.
