The objective of the study was to investigate the prevalence of Burnout Syndrome in community health agents working in the Family Health Units of a medium-sized municipality in the interior of the State of São Paulo. This was a cross-sectional study, in which 279 agents belonging to the 52 Family Health Units were invited from October 2016 to January 2017. The Cuestionario para la Elalucion del Síndrome de Quermarse por el Trabajo (CESQT) to obtain the level of burnout and a questionnaire was applied to collect sociodemographic data, containing information on sex, age, length of profession, educational level and family income. A descriptive analysis was carried out. 251 (89.9%) Community Health Agents participated in the study. There was a prevalence of BS at a critical level in Profile 1 (36.25%) and Profile 2 (24.30%). The majority of the participants were female (93.6%), married (65.3%), with up to 2 children (78.1%), had their own residence (85.7%), lived with up to three same household (79.3%) and finished high school 71.7%. Half of the sample (50%) were under 37 years of age, had less than three minimum wages (59.4%), were in the job less than six years (72 months) (56.6%) and were never dismissed because of disease (70.1%). The prevalence of BS in Community Health Agents was considered high in Profile 1 and 2. This result reflects the importance of the elaboration of preventive behaviors and nuclei of support to the health professional, in order to help in the daily confrontation of potentially stressful situations.
