Abstract

Burnout syndrome has reached workers worldwide, provoking mental health problems. Objective to investigate the burnout syndrome in elementary and middle school teachers. Cross-sectional study with 200 teachers from state schools in the north of the state of Paraná-Brazil. Data collected by means of a questionnaire for socio-demographic characterization and Maslach Inventory Burnout. Descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney 'U' test were used for the analysis. There was a significant difference between the averages in the professional accomplishment dimension of the skin color characteristic, yellow teachers obtained mean ≤33 points (Μ=27.0) indicating high levels of burnout, while the black professors Had a score of ≥40 points (Μ=43.6) indicating lower levels of burnout. Teachers with doctoral level present lower levels of burnout ≥40 with a mean score obtained from 44.0 points in the professional achievement dimension. The color of the skin, marital status and educational level as contributing factors for the development of burnout syndrome. It takes actions to promote teachers' mental health.
