Resumen

HUMBOLDT, Sofia von; RIBEIRO-GONCALVES, José Alberto; LOW, Gail  y  LEAL, Isabel. Sexual difficulties in psychotherapeutic context: a qualitative study with older adults. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.2, pp.367-373.  Epub 30-Sep-2022. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/22psd230202.

Older adults’ sexual well-being (SWB) can be significantly influenced by age and sexual difficulties. This study aims to explore the sexual difficulties that affect their SWB, and that were addressed in the context of person-centered therapy. Fifty-seven older adults aged between 65 and 82 years old and living in the community, participated in this qualitative study. Semi-structured interviews were carried out and the participants' narratives were submitted to a content analysis. The results revealed four main themes for these participants: (1) Absence of a partner; (2) family interference, (3) body dissatisfaction, (4) and sexually transmitted diseases. The SWB is mostly challenged by the absence of the partner and family interference. This study underlines the importance of exploring the sexual difficulties that the older population experiences, in relation to their SWB, as contributing for the efficacy of future clinical and health interventions with older adults.
