Adherence to treatment is essential for the management of type 1 diabetes, but it proves to be a complex task that implies the adoption of self-care behaviors. The present empirical study aims to identify obstacles that hinder self-management in adults with type 1 diabetes and understand how these may be associated with adherence to recommended treatment. A non-random sample was studied, consisting of 268 adults with type 1 diabetes, aged between 18 and 88 years, living in various regions of Portugal. Participants answered a Sociodemographic and Clinical Questionnaire, the Diabetes Self-Care Activities Scale, the Diabetes Treatment Barriers Scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, using an electronic form. The obstacles that proved to be the most impeding to the self-management of type 1 diabetes were those related to diet and physical exercise. Food and physical activity also proved to be the self-care activities with lower adherence rates. The perception of obstacles to the recommended treatment in adults with type 1 diabetes is related to the self-management of this chronic disease, specifically with self-care activities.
