Abstract

RODRIGUES, Telma  and  SILVA, Isabel. Obstacles to adherence to treatment of type 1 diabetes - systematic review. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.2, pp.441-448.  Epub Oct 30, 2022. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/22psd230212.

Diabetes is currently one of the main public health issues, as it is one of the most frequent chronic diseases around the world. This systematic bibliographical review aims to identify the obstacles and facilitators to adherence to the recommended treatment in adults with type 1 diabetes. Method: The electronic database consulted was b-on, with the following combination of descriptors: “type 1 diabetes” AND “adults” AND “obstacles, difficulties, or barriers” AND “self-care or self-management”. Results: 9 articles were selected, related to cross-sectional observational studies, with the adoption of quantitative and/or qualitative methods, published between 2013 and 2020. Studies reveal that the self-care activities in which adults with type 1 diabetes most frequently report the presence of obstacles are the domains of nutrition and physical exercise. The facilitators of treatment adherence identified are accessibility, environmental factors, behavioral habits, individual factors, desire to prevent the development of complications and use of technological devices. Discussion: A broader knowledge about the obstacles and facilitators of adherence to treatment will allow the planning of more specific interventions and will contribute to the implementation of improvements in health services.
