Resumen

GONCALVES, Joana; GALHARDO, Ana; CUNHA, Marina  y  MASSANO-CARDOSO, Ilda. Perception of knowledge regarding fertility preservation in the portuguese general population. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.3, pp.614-624.  Epub 31-Dic-2022. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/22psd230303.

Fertility preservation provides a resource to accomplish a parental project in cancer patients or patients facing other conditions affecting future fertility. Therefore, it is crucial for these patients to access fertility counseling. Nevertheless, few studies analyzed the population's knowledge and attitudes regarding fertility preservation. The current study aimed to examine the Portuguese population's perception of knowledge regarding fertility preservation for medical and non-medical reasons. An online survey, with a sample of 300 participants, was used to address the perception of knowledge and attitudes toward fertility preservation. The results revealed that the majority of the participants were aware that cancer treatments could negatively impact the patient’s fertility. Oocyte cryopreservation and semen cryopreservation were the fertility preservation techniques participants knew better. The study also revealed a high degree of agreement with the provision of fertility counseling, and participants were interested in having more information on this topic. Overall, the study provides relevant findings suggesting the need for enhancing health literacy on this topic.
