Population aging is a phenomenon present in several countries around the world. Such phenomenon deserves special attention from scientific studies. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of common mental disorders in people aged 50 years or more residing in rural cities. It is an exploratory, epidemiological, descriptive and transversal study of a quantitative approach. The sample of this study is made up of 400 people aged 50 years or more residing in rural cities of Paraíba. It was used as instrument of data collection: a) Sociodemographic questionnaire; b) Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). Data were analyzed through descriptive and bivariate statistics. From the analyzes, a prevalence of Common Mental Disorders (CMD) of 31% (n = 122) was found among the participants. Early identification of common mental disorders in people in maturity and old age, since this set of symptoms impact the exercise of daily activities and are sometimes confused as "own" symptoms of old age.
