Abstract

BUCHER-MALUSCHKE, Júlia; PEREIRA, Izamélia; SILVA, Jonas  and  KAPPLER, Christoph. Elderly father with an intellectual disabled daughter: case study. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2022, vol.23, n.3, pp.991-1003.  Epub Dec 31, 2022. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/22psd230333.

The increasing longevity of people with intellectual disabilities and the concomitant aging of their parents creates a problem for public health within the State and the assisted community. This work aims to understand the subjective processes of the elderly person with a disable child, based on the theory of subjectivity proposed by Fernando Luis Gonzáles Rey. The research was developed based on a case study with a 97-year-old man who cares for a daughter with a disability with 62-year-old. Through the constructive-interpretative methodology, through conversational dynamics and the complement of phrases, information was obtained that generated three zones of meaning: 1) Expectation of birth and the impact of the diagnosis; 2) Mobilizing actions to overcome the deficiency challenge; 3) The influence of disability on the exercise of paternity. The results indicated the production of meanings in old age, subjectively configured throughout their life history, with implications for care in the family, government institutions and civil society. It is recommended that health professionals broaden their understanding of the subjectivity of the elderly, as these processes provide meaning for existence.
