Abstract

VICENTINI, Lia; KIRST, Flávio; DE-BORTOLI, Ângela  and  DE-BORTOLI, Robélius. Learning hate speech in esports. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.1, pp.148-160.  Epub June 30, 2023. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/23psd240113.

Hate Speech (HS) is a reality in the world society. The main concern when studying HS is the possibility of it leading to crimes. HS alone can have devastating effects. For example, HS can silence those who are its targets. The purpose of this article is to formulate theory about Hate Speech learning from Esports players. This is a retrospective documentary study using the method called Ground Theory and is based on three basic pillars called ‘concepts’, ‘categories’ and ‘propositions’. The sample was selected from two searches in the SCOPUS database using the keywords ‘hate speech’ and later ‘league of legends’ that were present in the title, abstract or keywords of the articles. The search resulted in 1,383 and 166 publications, respectively. Initially they were analyzed qualitatively and later the publications were analyzed qualitatively. After a detailed analysis of the literature, it seems evident that studies in the field of Hate Speech are recent, especially among Esports players. It is a current and rapidly developing topic; esports produce hate speech among their players; the learning process of hate speech occurs through the reinforcement of behavior and game results; Esports Administrators show concern to minimize Hate Speech and; the key to minimizing hate speech is to act on the winning athletes' behaviors.

Keywords : Dangerous Behavior; Violence; Hostility; Video Games.
