Aging and the possible emergence of functional dependence in the elderly shows the fundamental role of the family in playing the role of informal caregiver, but it is characterized as a complex and difficult activity that can generate numerous implications in the caregiver's life and surroundings. This study aimed to analyze the psychological implications of the experience of caring for an elderly family member with functional dependence in the home context, investigating the effects of exercising the role of informal caregiver as well as the support of psychology. Participated in this research 34 family caregivers, who are assisted by the Family Health Strategy unit in a city of the forest zone of Minas Gerais, being interviewed 33 women (97.06%) and 01 man (2.94%) with ages between 26 to 85 years. Were applied the sociodemographic questionnaire and the assessment of the physical, emotional and social impact of the informal caregiver's role. The results indicated that the care of an elderly relative outcome in overloads in the initial period that can be mitigated through early interventions that provide psychological and care support.
