Abstract

BARCELOS, Anna et al. Analysis of quality of life and chronic pain in elderly people. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.2, pp.561-571.  Epub Oct 31, 2023. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/23psd240212.

The aim was to analyze the association of osteoarticular and musculoskeletal disorders (OMD) and chronic pain (CP) with successful aging, quality of life (QOL), body mass index (BMI), physical activity level (PAL). The study method has a quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional design. The non-probabilistic sample comprises 101 Brazilian participants, over the age of 60, who regularly participate in water aerobics activities. The instruments were: Multidimensional Pain Assessment Scale, EUROHIS-QOL, SOC, IPAQ and Body Mass Index. The results of analyses of correlation and regression showed an association between QOL and PAL in the group with OMD and the presence of CP, that is, the promotion of PAL, fighting sedentary lifestyle, is associated with an increase of QOL. In the group with absence of OMD and presence of CP, a direct relationship between successful aging strategies and the BMI was identified and an indirect relationship with the length of time of participation in the water aerobics project. In this group, the promotion of successful aging is associated with the practice of water aerobics and body weight control. In conclusion, the choice of water aerobics is linked to OMD, with repercussions on the improvement of functionality, QOL and the scope of successful aging.
