SPERANZA, Marina; MAZARI, Adrieli Fernanda; MAGALHAES, Lilian y CID, Maria Fernanda Barboza. Adolescents’ sense of belonging and mental health: a scoping review. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.2, pp.779-793. Epub 31-Oct-2023. ISSN 1645-0086. https://doi.org/10.15309/23psd240230.
This study mapped and analyzed, through a scoping review, the relationship between the concepts of adolescents’ sense of belonging and mental health. The search was carried out in the Web of Science, Scopus, Scielo and BVS databases, and the terms used were “sense of belong*”, teenage*, adolescen*, youth, “mental health” and “well-being”, and their respective correspondents in Portuguese and Spanish. Database searches generated 270 results, of which 30 articles were considered eligible. It is pointed out that more than half of the researches were developed in the school context. On the qualitative data, analyzed through the Thematic Analysis of the objectives of the studies, five categories of analysis emerged: 1) The centrality of the school in the construction of the sense of belonging of adolescents; 2) Sense of belonging and the psychological suffering in adolescents; 3) Sense of belonging as a protective factor for Mental Health of adolescents; 4) Other factors related to the sense of belonging of adolescents; 5) Validation of scales related to the sense of belonging. More qualitative, Brazilian and Latin American studies on this theme are needed, especially participatory designs that address the different contexts in which adolescents circulate and/or have the right to circulate.
