Resumen

SOARES, Ana et al. “Pleasure in the pain of another?”: relationship between sadism, personality and human values. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.3, pp.1162-1172.  Epub 31-Dic-2023. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/23psd240330.

The present study had aimed to evaluate the relationship between sadism, human values and personality traits (dark and bright). Specifically, we sought to identify to what extent and direction these variables are related and the role of personality traits and human values as predictors of sadism. There was the participation of 351 people, with a mean age of 32 years (SD=7.70), most of them female (63.8%). These answered the measures of Assessment of Sadistic Personality, Basic Value Survey, Prosocial Personality Inventory, Dark Triad Dirty Dozen and demographic questions. The findings indicated that sadism was related to different personality traits and interactive and normative values, but it was predicted only by the dark trait of machiavellianism and by the virtuous traits of beneficence and inexpressiveness and normative values. It is estimated that the findings reinforce the role of personality and values in understanding sadism.

Palabras clave : Sadism; Personality; Human values; Bright; Dark triad.
