Abstract

MARINHO, Diana; SILVA, Isabel  and  GUIMARAES, Raquel. Development of breast cancer impact on companions scale: psychometric study. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2024, vol.25, n.1, pp.99-110.  Epub Mar 31, 2024. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/24psd250110.

The design of wellbeing promotion programs for the partners of women diagnosed with breast cancer requires the existence of specific measuring instruments that take into account the domains that are actually relevant to this population. The aim of this exploratory study was to construct and validate a scale to assess the impact of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment on partners. A convenience sample of 84 partners of women diagnosed with breast cancer answered the questionnaire developed in this study, a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Cancer Patient Family/Caregiver Quality of Life Scale (CQOLC) and the Portuguese version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The Assessment of the Impact of Breast Cancer on Companions Scale (EAICMC) was developed, with 24 items, organized into three factors. The EAICMC showed good reliability (α=0.82). The item-total and item-subscale correlation proved its acceptable convergent/discriminant internal validity and the distribution of responses across its items showed that it has reasonable sensitivity. The correlation between the scores obtained on the EAICMC, HADS and CQOLC confirmed the scale's external validity. It is a well-accepted instrument that could be useful in clinical practice.
