Resumen

VASQUES, Catarina et al. Sibling similarities in physical fitness . Rev. Port. Cien. Desp. [online]. 2007, vol.7, n.1, pp.9-17. ISSN 1645-0523.

The aim of this study was to analyse sibling similarity in the levels physical fitness (AptF). The sample comprised 366 sibling pairs of both sex, with 10 to 18 years of age. AptF< was evaluated with Fitnessgram test battery (curl-up, push-up, trunk-lift, and one mile run/walk). Pearson correlation (r) was used to analyze the sibling similarities in each test. Canonical correlation (Rc) was used to analyze sibling similarities in AptF considering its multidimensionality. In brothers the highest correlation was found in push-up (r=0,46). In sisters the highest correlation was found in one mile run/walk (r=0,49) and curl-up (r=0,48). The Rc for siblings of same sex was 0,68; for the opposite sex was 0,27. In each test, sisters were more similar then brothers. Siblings of opposite sex showed a very low similarity. It was concluded that, as a whole, physical fitness is more similar is sisters, than in brothers, while is opposite sex brethren there is a lack of fitness clustering.

Palabras clave : sibling similarity; children and adolescents; physical fitness.
