Abstract

MELO, Victor Andrade de  and  KNIJNIK, Jorge Dorfman. Soccer, movies and masculinity: an analysis of Asa branca, um sonho brasileiro (1981) and Onda nova (1983). Rev. Port. Cien. Desp. [online]. 2009, vol.9, n.2-3, pp.183-191. ISSN 1645-0523.

Amid the presence of soccer in the movies, we find traces of an epoch, representations of different dimensions of an historical period, some elements that offer us a glimpse into the spirit of an era. In view of those potentialities, this study aims to analyze two film productions from the 1980’s, Asa Branca, Um Sonho Brasileiro (Djalma Limongi Batista, 1981) and Onda Nova (Ícaro Martins and José Antônio Garcia, 1983), both of which, each in their own way, enable us to identify and discuss the changes in and paradoxes experienced by the Brazilian society of that time, especially as regards social gender relations. Subtly, in the case of Asa Branca, or openly and explicitly in Onda Nova, what we may gather is that owing to the social changes, new attitudes and behaviors are expected from men and new masculinities are built within the Brazilian society, reflecting advances and questioning the former gender order. In this context, the sport dialogue to these new symbolic buildings, something important to be discussed.

Keywords : cinema; sports; masculinity; soccer.
