CARDOSO, Manuela. Migration and development strategies of Small Island Developing States: Case studies: Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe. Cadernos de Estudos Africanos [online]. 2015, n.29, pp.103-128. ISSN 1645-3794.
This paper discusses the issue of emigration in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) through the analysis of two case studies, Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe, with similar paths in terms of independence and formal political processes but with considerably different levels of development. To do so, the article analyses the interaction between a multiplicity of distinctive economic, social, and cultural factors that affect the paths of these two countries. To inform the analysis, two theoretical dimensions are discussed: one related to the classification of this group of countries on the basis of their development strategies and another to the evolution of theories of migration.
