João Paulo Borges Coelho, born in 1955 in Porto, grew up in Mozambique and became within the last decade one of the most productive and recognized writers of this country. He is also a professor and researcher of Contemporary History at the Eduardo Mondlane University. The following interview with João Paulo Borges Coelho was carried out in July 2014 in Maputo. The topics are, among others, issues of identity in colonial and post-independence era, regional peculiarities of Mozambican culture(s), the relationship between “European modernity” and “African tradition”, the link between urban and rural areas, the memory of the liberation struggle and of the civil war, as well as particularities of different literary works of the author.
