Abstract

KRACHENSKI, Naiara. Production and circulation of stereotypes about Africans in the photographs of the German Colonial Society (1909-1939). Cadernos de Estudos Africanos [online]. 2018, n.36, pp.187-210. ISSN 1645-3794.

I aim to reflect in this article how the representational regimes are formed and operate from the visual culture and, especially, I try to discuss the German Colonial Society visual politics. I claim, in the first place, that the use of stereotypes in the incessant and repetitive work of certain representational practice to determine an exclusive meaning about certain theme is one of the basis to the production and reproduction of such effort. In this case, I work with the concept of ‘ethnographical gaze’ in the visual production of the absolute otherness of the African subject. Secondly, I aim to point how the meanings that are thought to be rigid suffer important semantic changes. Finally, I present in which ways those images circulated amidst the German imperialist politics of the twentieth century.

Keywords : German imperialism; visuality; stereotypes; photography; colonialism; Africa.
