SEMEDO, Rui Jorge. Politico-social activism and institutional crisis in Guinea-Bissau: Case of MCCI, Bassora di Povu, O Cidadão and Voz do Cidadão do Mundo. Cadernos de Estudos Africanos [online]. 2020, n.40, pp.13-36. Epub 14-Mar-2022. ISSN 1645-3794. https://doi.org/10.4000/cea.5200.
Twenty-four years since the first general elections (presidential and legislative) were held in 1994, Guinea-Bissau is still in an ongoing process of transition. Subsequent political-institutional crises involving political parties and organs of sovereignty have hindered the completion of legislatures and, consequently, the mandate of successive governments. Faced with facts and evidence of cyclical crises in the functioning of democracy, civic movements arose with antagonistic visions and urgings demanding political and governmental stabilization. The purpose here, is to observe how the civic actions of the MCCI, Bassora di Povu, O Cidadão and Voz do Cidadão do Mundo have contributed towards the mobilization and awakening of conscience of the Guinean society in face of the requirements of the democratic premises of participation and contestation.
