Abstract

GOMES, Antonieta Rosa. THE DIFFICULT PROCESS OF RESOLVING THE CASAMANCE CONFLICT: CAN MEDIATION SUCCEED?. Cadernos de Estudos Africanos [online]. 2021, n.42, pp.191-213.  Epub June 27, 2022. ISSN 1645-3794.  https://doi.org/10.4000/cea.6660.

The Casamance conflict is an armed secession conflict in southern Senegal in which the Casamance Democratic Forces Movement (MFDC) claims the independence of the Casamance region. The process of resolving this conflict began in the 1990s and involved different actors, among which neighboring states of Senegal: Guinea-Bissau and Gambia; traditional and religious leaders; Senegalese civil society organizations and, in recent years, the Community of Sant’Egidio. From 1991 to 2004, several peace agreements were signed between the parties, but all failed due to non-compliance. Therefore, the mediation, the role of the different actors, and the obstacles to peace in this protracted conflict will be examined.

Keywords : Casamance; conflict resolution; mediation; intervening parties.
