Abstract

VICENTE, Paula  and  REIS, Elizabeth. Determinants of companies’ participation in selective separation and depositation of residues. Rev. Portuguesa e Brasileira de Gestão [online]. 2007, vol.6, n.2, pp.20-30. ISSN 1645-4464.

The national strategy to deal with the problem of excessive solid waste production has been based, to a large extent, in promoting selective separation and deposition of residues for posterior recycling. Both citizens and companies have been targeted to cooperate. Based on a recent survey carried out on 755 companies in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, this paper characterizes recycling practices of companies, evaluates the reasons for their participation and non-participation in the recycling program and investigates the influence of specific incentives to activate the intention of companies to cooperate with selective separation and deposition of residues. Outcomes reveal that most companies do separate and deposit their residues for selective-recollection but do it with some incorrectness. Results also imply that more and better information on recycling and improved conditions of the logistic system of selective recollection are significant influences in companies’ decision to cooperate with the selective separation and depositation of residues.
