Abstract

SERRA, Fernando; FERREIRA, Manuel  and  CONTRIGIANE, Evandro. Turbulence in the 1990s: Bunge’s turnaround. Rev. Portuguesa e Brasileira de Gestão [online]. 2009, vol.8, n.1, pp.76-88. ISSN 1645-4464.

Corporate longevity is a core issue in strategy. The long living firms are those that are able to operate strategic change and renewal. Those changes may include the reconfiguration of the portfolio of competences and businesses and the change of the top management team. To proceed with the internal changes and recover, describes a turnaround process. In this paper we describe the turnaround of Bunge Limited, during the nineties. Overcome the hazards, the firm is now a world leader in many agribusiness segments. Our goal is to understand how firms may restructure and recover from crises, with a special focus on how the firms reconfigure their portfolios of businesses and resources, identify the strategic components and the manner in which they allocate resources. The theoretical background is supported on the literature on turnaround and the resources deployed during the process, following the RBV.
