Abstract

MEDEIROS JUNIOR, Roberto de; SERRA, Fernando  and  FERREIRA, Manuel. CEO tenure and organizational performance: a study in large Brazilian companies . Rev. Portuguesa e Brasileira de Gestão [online]. 2011, vol.10, n.3, pp.60-69. ISSN 1645-4464.

This article examines the relation between organizational performance and the Chief Executive Officers’ (CEO) tenure in large Brazilian companies, between 1999 and 2008. The results indicate a U-inverted shape relating CEO tenure to firm performance, whereby firms have lower performance for intermediate tenure lengths. Therefore, we failed to detect linear relationship tenure to performance. Moreover, there are different U-inverted shapes and firms may achieve performance peaks in different moments. Evidence reveals that the tendency curve of Brazilian firms follows identical patterns to those of US firms, possibly allowing, at least in part, to extrapolate to Brazil US-based research.

Keywords : Top Management Team; CEO’s Tenure; Organization’s Performance; Resource-Based View; Chief Executive Office.
