Abstract

GELEILATE, José  and  FORTE, Sérgio. Motivations and strategies of the three biggest Brazilian banks facing the new global economic configuration. Rev. Portuguesa e Brasileira de Gestão [online]. 2012, vol.11, n.1, pp.02-12. ISSN 1645-4464.

Since the financial crisis in 2008, internationalization has become an increasingly attractive alternative for Brazilian banks. In this context, this work aims to answer why and how Brazilian banks become international. Additionally, this study aimed to calculate the degree of internationalization of these banks. Based on a multiple case study, with the content analysis technique and using the software Atlas/ti, top managers of the three largest national banks were interviewed. It was concluded that the three Brazilian banks in process of internationalization began operations abroad with motivations of the asset seeking type, and showing different entry strategies into each country. Itaú Unibanco showed a better performance on the degree of internationalization (0.59) than Banco do Brasil (0.40) and Bradesco (0.33), mainly because Itaú Unibanco is the institution with the largest number of subsidiaries and greater profitability abroad, having also the largest number of employees abroad.

Keywords : Banks; Strategy; Internationalization.
