Abstract

SANTOS, Joaquim; CAETANO, António  and  JESUINO, Jorge Correia. The leaders’ functional skills and team effectiveness. Rev. Portuguesa e Brasileira de Gestão [online]. 2012, vol.11, n.2-3, pp.95-106. ISSN 1645-4464.

Several theoretical team leadership models have been proposed based on the functional approach of leadership but until now none of them has been empirically tested. The purpose of this study is to test the importance of a theoretical model of functional leadership considering the relation between a set of leadership skills and the effectiveness of the led teams. 84 individuals took part in this study and were submitted to a leadership proof by a team of six members. This group performed non-structured tasks which would require the interdependence of all members. In the factorial analysis conducted to the evaluation grid, four factors have been found which adjust to the four leadership skills suggested in the proposed theoretical model. These leadership skills observed in the tested leaders are associated with the effectiveness of the led teams.

Keywords : Functional Team Leadership; Team Effectiveness.
