Abstract

SOUSA, Natalina  and  EUSEBIO, Celeste. An analysis of environmental management of Portuguese hotels . Rev. Portuguesa e Brasileira de Gestão [online]. 2013, vol.12, n.2, pp.60-74. ISSN 1645-4464.

Environmental threats to the future of Humanity constitute a main concern of the modern society. Notwithstanding this concern to encourage companies to adopt environmental management practices, little research has focused on Portuguese hotel industry's response to this challenge. This paper analyses the environmental practices implemented by Portuguese hotels. In order to achieve this objective, in 2010, a questionnaire was e-mailed to managers of all Portuguese mainland hotels. The results suggest that most hotels implement environmental management practices, but only about 40% adopts a written environmental policy. Energy, water and solid waste management are the main areas of intervention. Implications of the findings and recommendations to further investigate environmental management practices in the hotel industry are discussed.
