Resumen

PINHEIRO, Ana; ESTEVES, Teresa  y  SULEMAN, Fátima. Selecting expatriates: The relationship between skills and the international staffing model. Rev. Portuguesa e Brasileira de Gestão [online]. 2015, vol.14, n.1, pp.48-60. ISSN 1645-4464.

This study explores the relationship between skills required to being a candidate for expatriation and the international staffing model. The underlying assumption is that selection criteria should be consistent with staffing model. Empirical analysis is supported on a qualitative and explorative study and uses information from three Portuguese multinationals firms with expatriates in several countries worldwide. The findings illustrate that skills like adaptability, leadership and goal orientation capabilities are examples of competencies shared by all models, but there are in addition skills that are specific to staffing models, which are related to cultural issues. Ethnocentric firms privilege respect for cultural diversity skills, while capabilities that facilitate cultural interaction are valued by geocentric firms.
