Abstract

ALI, Zahra  and  ANTONIO, Nelson. Motivation of non-family employees in the Portuguese family business hotel industry. RGPLP [online]. 2018, vol.17, n.1, pp.4-19. ISSN 1645-4464.

How to get family businesses in the hotel industry in Portugal to motivate and retain talented non-family employees was analyzed using ten qualitative cases and thirty in-depth interviews. Nepotism and the presence of emotional discussions between owners were evident. Motivating factors derived from ‘familiness' stood out. The conclusion can be drawn that there are distinctions between employees' motivation in family hotels from the remaining hotels because family businesses have unique characteristics with implications for non-family employees' satisfaction and retention. Motivation is important as allows the retention of differentiating talents, making competitive advantages possible in this service industry. The hospitality business is characterized by a positive relationship between satisfied workers and clients, whereas the majority of studies in this field focus on monitoring non-family employees.
