Some common teachers’ perceptions about the dimensions of art education are listed as well as concepts about the value of art education from literature are used to question roles of art education in the society. Some possible reasons that justify the presence of arts education in the curriculum are pointed out, however it is acknowledged that not all art education practices and routines promote skills for critical understanding of visual culture or learning experiences rooted in basis of moral action and social compromise. The questions point out for the need to relocate art education practices in order to help to promote broader goals such as peace education, education for sustainability, for increasing tolerance and respect of otherness.
