Abstract
FREIRE, Maria Raquel. Debate: a new Cold War?. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2008, n.20, pp.49-66. ISSN 1645-9199.
The events in the hot summer in the South Caucasus are the outcome of a complex dynamics in which a broad set of policies and options converged to give way to the spiral of violence that ensued on the night of the 7th to the 8th of August, 2008, when Russian troops invaded Georgia through South Ossetia. The Russian intervention in Georgia should be analysed in the context of the recent political evolution in the republic, clarifying the framework for relations with its neighbours, as well as other international actors, and highlighting the implications of these developments in the area, with a particular focus on Russian foreign policy objectives.
