Abstract

VAZ-PINTO, Raquel. The Great Hall and Tiananmen Legacy. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2009, n.23, pp.93-100. ISSN 1645-9199.

This essay has the goal of reflecting upon the debate that has taken place in China on the issues of human rights and liberal democracy, twenty years since the 4th of June massacre in Tiananmen Square. We will analyse the legacy of Tiananmen and the liveliness of the internal discussion concerning the political as well as economical options of Beijing and, in particular, "Charter 08", a document that was the outcome of a concerted effort by a varied group of Chinese citizens. A theme that is even more pressing by the multiple analyses that point towards a truly multipolar 21st Century.

Keywords : China; Tiananmen; Human rights; democracy.
