Abstract

MACHAQUEIRO, Mário Artur. Transnational Islam and the Portuguese colonialism ghosts. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2011, n.30, pp.071-082. ISSN 1645-9199.

This article examines the evolution of Portuguese colonial policies regarding Islam in Guinea and Mozambique. Such policies turned from an image of Muslim as foe to a more reconciling picture, in which Muslims could be presented as potential allies of the Portuguese power in the war against nationalist movements. The article analyses those strategies and the actors that were behind them: the Catholic Church, the core of political power and its local ramifications in the colonies.

Keywords : Portugal; colonialism; colonial war; transnational Islam.
