Abstract

PINTO, Ana Santos. The EU and the Arab Spring: between the addiction to democratic rhetoric and the risks of political action. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2011, n.30, pp.129-136. ISSN 1645-9199.

The 2011 political crisis in the North Africa and Middle East will bring important consequences for the eu, at external and internal level. At the external level, because the EU faces serious challenges to its international image and credibility; and at the internal level due the divergences, between the European member states, regarding the immediate responses to the crisis. The Mediterranean could be one of the EU privileged areas of influence, however the Union seems to be unable to overcome its addiction to the rhetoric, as well as its political risks.

Keywords : European Union; North Africa; Middle East; democracy.
